it wont fire

i just got a browning 380 and the guy who sold it to me said that someone took out a part to keep it from firing,when i have it cocked, and pull the trigger,it wont catch the hammer,it seems like its missing something thats holds the trigger part so it wont reach the hammer......or is it cuz it needs a mag to dry fire,......if u have any suggestions it would really help.......
