Indesit WIXL12 never advances from wash to rinse cycle

My Indesit WIXL12 often remains on wash cycle, constantly adding water in short 10 second bursts, then rotating for a few seconds, but never getting onto the rinse phase. I have to change it to the rinse position or it will stay in this state forever. This seems to be a problem mainly on even numbered programmes and/or on delayed start. It seems something's wrong in the water saving technology used on this machine: does anyone have similar experience, and a solution..?...
