shutter release problem

i have just purchased a praktica bx20 slr camera it was what i wanted i took it out tonight to take some shots of the waterfront and the camera just stopped working i have tried to find help with the problem the shutter is in the up position if i cant find the answer here i think i will have to take it to my local camera shop...
